Pirates Morning Report: Spring Training Update.

We are a little less than three weeks until the start of the regular season. The Pirates, of course, have made no big moves. They made another waiver signing. Johan Oviedo probably won’t pitch until after the All Star break. Speculation continues about who will be on the 26 man roster. I am a little surprised that when you see most people’s list, Endy Rodriguez is left off. I am no Pirate insider. Seeing that so much makes me think they might be starting him off in AAA. The other two names that keep popping up are Jack Suwinski and Henry Davis. They are having pretty good springs. I see Suwinski making the team before Davis. The one thing that people seem to keep forgetting is that they both stink defensively. The outfield is so thin that taking a last chance early flier on Suwinski is probably ok. If putting Davis on the roster means taking Rodriguez off, that can be nothing but a bad move. This also means that Nick Yorke, Billy Cook, and Ji Hwan Bae will not be on the opening day roster. Bae is having a good spring at the plate. I would rather take a flier on him than on Suwinski. According to the Pirate Broadcast Booth, Adam Frazier might be slightly injured. He has not played in over a week. If he opens on the IL, that may clear a spot on the roster. There is only one sure thing when it comes to the Pirates. The best 13 players will not be on the opening day roster.

The Pirates did another waiver deal. I wonder what the record is for waiver deals over a 12 month period. The Pirates have probably set it. This time they picked up reliever Justin Thomas from the Colorado Rockies. It is surprising, despite Thomas’s raw numbers, how positive the opinions have been on this pick up. Some have gone as far to say that he is the best pick up of the off season. Pitching for Colorado always will skew a pitchers numbers. Lawrence had his best year in 2023 and his worst season in 2024. On the positive side he has stayed healthy in these two seasons appearing in 125 games. Last year he appeared in 56 games. Thirty of those were in Colorado. In 39 appearances he gave up no runs. In two appearances he gave up 5 runs. He struggled in one bad stretch in late July and early August. During this time, he gave up runs in 7 of 10 appearances. All of this led to some pretty bad numbers in 2024. In 2023 he appeared in 69 games and with an ERA of 3.72 and an ERA+ of 134. He finished strong giving up only 1 run in his last 12 games. Still, last year he seemed to lose his strikeout pitch. He also lost his control. This resulted in the worst Strike Out to Walk ratio of his career. The Pirates are hoping he regains his 2023 form. Just add him to the list of players that the Pirates hope regain their 2023 form. Ke’Bryan Hayes, Jared Triolo, Jack Suwinski, David Bednar, Colin Holderman, and Mitch Keller.

The Pirates finished last in their division. They continue to do very little to improve their team. They seem to be giving jobs to the players who contributed mightily to their last-place finish. There is still time to make moves and clean house, but it is growing short. It is possible that this could change in the blink of an eye, but I am not holding my breath. The Pirates have lots of decisions to make in these remaining 3 weeks of spring training. I am betting they won’t make very good ones.

Pirates Morning Report: Rough Trip From Philadelphia to New York.

Final Score: Pirates 3 Mets 6

Why The Pirates Lost: Oniel Cruz’s at bats summed up this lost. He struck out 3 times, He took 6 strikes, and all 3 swings were out of the strike zone. On his last at bat, again he took a strike, swung at a pitch out of the strike zone, but did manage to hit a ball to right field to end the game. Rowdy Tellez had one excellent at bat to start the top of the 8th. He took a strike, swung at a ball and took a called 3rd strike. Both pitches were well inside the strike zone, far from borderline. Even though they managed 3 runs the offense really stunk out the joint. They only got 3 hits. They walked 7 times but struck out 10. On the defensive side of the ball Henry Davis and Connor Joe excelled. Davis had trouble catching anything and made a lousy effort on a tag play at the plate. Just to go along with the offensive philosophy of the night, he took 3 called strikes in the top of the 9th, with all of them well within the strike zone. Connor Joe caught a ball and just had to toss it into the infield to keep the runners from moving up, but threw in the dirt toward the dugout, allowing the second Met run to score. The Pirates were ahead going into the bottom of the 6th and completely collapsed. The pitching staff gave up 3 runs in the 6th and 3 runs in the 8th as the Pirates lost 6-3 to send their record to 11-6. There can only be one explanation for such an all-round poorly played game. That trip from Philadelphia to New York must have been brutal with the time change and all. If it would have been possible, I am sure that Shelton would have rested anybody that played Sunday, after such a brutal travel day. This was by far their worst game of the year.

Key Moments Of The Game: The Pirates had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth. Martin Perez had danced through some raindrops but was cruising along pretty well. Then the Mets opened the inning with 2 singles. Perez got Pete Alonzo to pop up in the infield one out. One more single loaded the bases and the Pirates started to crumble from bus lag. Perez walked in the first run. Then a pop up to short right field that Connor Joe managed to catch but then crapped his pants and threw the ball at the same time allowing the second run to score. Shelton then removed Perez in favor of Hunter (I Like To Throw The Ball Right Down The Middle In High Leverage Situations) Stratton. This type of pitching resulted in a double and the score was tied 3-3. Just for good measure he hit the next batter but did manage to get the third out, FINALLY. Then came the Henry Davis show in the bottom of the 8th that sealed the deal for Mets. Aroldis Chapman started the 8th and struck out the first batter. Then Jeff McNeil struck out on a ball low and away that was ruled a wild pitch, but Henry Davis made a half ass swipe at the ball and literally scooted the ball further to the left to allow McNeil to reach first base. It was the key play of the game. Chapman walked the next batter and both he and McNeil stole 2nd and 3rd. A double by Harrison Bader gave the Mets a 5-3 lead. They added another run thanks to the Davis I don’t know how to tag play.

Next Game: Tonight, the Mets in New York. Hopefully the Pirates will be well rested after such an exhausting trip. Jared Jones will take the hill for the Pirates’. The road trip stands at 2-3. I know it has been exhausting for me, just watching them play the way they did last night. I have nothing more to write except I hope there are better days ahead.

Pirates Mid-March Report

Spring Training is in full swing with opening day 17 days away. Already the Pirates have a big injury with Jarlin Garcia going down with some kind of unexplained arm injury where he cannot even grip the baseball. Who knows the outcome of this one. He would have been a big part of the bullpen. He had been a solid left hand bullpen guy with no history of arm issues in the past. His injury is not changing my mind about this team being a contender, but it is a blow, none the less. Ke’Bryan Hayes seems to be as fragile as ever, with now a thumb injury being the culprit, but until proven otherwise, I am going to remain optimistic about him and his ability to play a full season. I am not as confident, injury or no injury, that he will become an above average hitter. If he would, then that would be a great asset to add to his superb fielding. The only other thing of note, it does seem like Travis Swaggerty is making some noise this spring. This is a number 1 pick who has done nothing, up to this point, to warrant him playing in the majors. I think the Pirates missed a big opportunity last year in not bringing up for about 2 months, and showing what he could do. Even if Swaggerty continues to have a good spring, I doubt seriously he will beat out Canaan Smith-Njigba for a roster spot. If anything, because they are so thin at outfield, they may wind up keeping both of them. It will be interesting to see if he gets a legitimate shot. Even though the Pirates have given up a lot of runs this spring, the pitchers that you expect to be on the team are doing well. Most of the runs that are being given up are by pitchers that won’t be on the opening day roster. For the most part Spring Training is going well, especially for the starting pitchers.

The main purpose of Spring Training is to get ready for the regular season. It is to stay healthy and work on your game. Despite this, I still read things trying to put significance on spring training performances. They are absolutely 100% meaningless, with so many examples that I am not bothering to even write about them. What Travis Swaggerty is doing in these games I put no stock in. I will be happy to be wrong about this concerning him. The Pirates can always use a bat that is a decent fielder. I think the players are working nicely toward their goal of getting out of the gate well, with the intention of setting up a winning attitude for this team. I am making no real speculation on who is going to be on the opening day roster. We will know this soon enough and then I will give an opinion on how I feel about who is going up North. I will blog about the team a couple of days before opening day and then the Pirate Morning Report will start once again giving a synopsis of each game in a brief concise no holds barred format, sparing no punches. It will be a new year and thing, with the Pirates trying to win games for the first time in about 22 months.

Pirates Morning Report

FINAL SCORE: PIRATES 2 NATIONALS 7

WHY THE PIRATES LOST: DEREK SHELTON MADE UP ANOTHER GOOFY LINE UP WITH ONLY 2 OUTFIELDERS AND PLAYING PARK OVER NEWMAN. ANOTHER POOR PERFORMANCE BY MITCH KELLER SEALED THE DEAL. HE FACED 21 BATTERS WITH 10 GETTING ON BASE AND GIVING UP 4 RUNS, THROWING 84 PITCHES IN JUST 3 AND 2/3 INNINGS. YET I WAKE UP THIS MORNING READING THAT HE IS ON THE VERGE. ON THE VERGE OF WHAT I DON’T KNOW, CERTAINLY NOT GETTING COMMAND OF HIS PITCHES. THERE IS NO QUESTION OF THE 5 STARTERS HE IS THE WORSE. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF SPRING TRAINING PERFORMANCE BEING MEANINGLESS. YOU WANT ANOTHER EXAMPLE, THE LEADING HOME RUN TEAM IN SPRING TRAINING IS NOW 27TH IN HOME RUNS AND NOT LIKELY TO MOVE UP.

KEY PLAY OF THE GAME: KELLER THROWING THE FIRST PITCH OF THE GAME. THE FIRST FOUR PLAYERS GOT SINGLES AND IT WAS 2-0 BEFORE YOU COULD SAY ON THE VERGE.

NEXT GAME: TONIGHT, NATIONALS AT PITTSBURGH. I AM SURE THAT HAYES AND REYNOLDS WILL NEED TO BE RESTED TONIGHT, OR SUNDAY AT THE LATEST. MAYBE PARK OR TUCKER CAN GO BEHIND THE PLATE. MAYBE THE PIRATES WON’T USE A DH. WHO KNOWS WHAT CRAZY LINE UP WILL BE OUT THERE TONIGHT? IT IS THE ONE THING THAT KEEPS THE PIRATES INTERESTING, AT LEAST.
